Shoveling Tips

Warm up your body first:

Do some light stretching

1) Back muscles - plant your feet and gently twist left to right, then lean side to side
2) Leg muscles - keeping your legs straight, bend forward letting your head and arms hang down
3) Arms - gently pull one arm across your body, switch arms
4) Wrists - with your arms straight out in front of you, bend your wrists up and down several times slowly

Protect your back when shoveling:
1) Bend your knees, don't bend or lean forward from the waist
2) Push the snow like a plow when possible to avoid lifting
3) If you must lift the snow, make sure not to twist while lifting
4)
Switch your dominant leg and dominant hand from time to time, don't always stand with your right foot forward and lift with your right arm

Take frequent breaks:

Go inside to warm up & get a drink of water.

Stretch again afterward:

Stretch the same areas as before paying special attention to any sore or stiff areas.
