Causes and Treatments for Knee Pain
Knee pain is very common, especially among athletes. Common causes include:
• Overuse injuries: commonly produce pain in the attachments of the muscles to the bones
• Tibial torsion: often produces pain on the outside (lateral) edge of your knee and can sometimes radiate or travel down the leg
• Internal derangement: usually a deep pain in the knee that is difficult to pinpoint
• Patellar tracking disorders: cause pain in various locations of the knee depending on the pattern of movement of the kneecap
• IT band syndrome: produces pain on the inside (medial) edge of the knee, and in more chronic or severe cases, also produces pain on the outside of the thigh
The cause of your knee pain will be determined through a thorough history and examination. The specific course of treatment may vary by condition, however, chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitative exercises, and at home instructions are all essential parts of treating your knee pain. Additional methods of treatment include: acupuncture, kinesio taping, cupping, muscular facilitation, and active release technique.
As an athlete myself, I understand the urge to continue your regular activities, no matter how intense the pain gets. So my goal, as your Chiropractor, is to get you back to doing the activities that you enjoy as soon as possible, while decreasing the risk for re-injury.
